Ecdysis was created to compete in the Grand Rapids 2010 Artprize competition. Like Scrappy, the seven-foot sculpture was made using recycled metal such as two propane tank ends and over 3000 surplus bolts.

The globe was counterbalanced to allow it to always rest in the shown position but still rotates freely enough so that even a small child can rotate it.

Ecdysis, which is when reptiles and insects shed their outer skin, was created to show the earth in a stage of global transformation.  The rusty metal on the bottom is shedding away revealing a fresh new planet. This concept embodies the global importance of reducing our impact on our planet whether it’s through recycling, conservation or looking to new innovative power options.
